Mr. MacGregor Ain't Got Nothing on Me

Well things are moving right along with our garden.  This weekend, Hubs brought home a trailer of compost to mix in with our North Carolina clay.  You see, in the Piedmont area of North Carolina, you've got about 3 - 5 inches of top soil followed by an undetermined amount of red clay.  Great for bricks, not so great for other things.  Mostly because clay doesn't drain well.

So, while he was tilling in the compost (see below photos) I was sowing seed in my new garden flats.  You can pick these up at WalMart for about $5 each.

Excited to get the garden started!

The peat circles start out about 1/2"
After adding LOTS of water, they get to be about 1 - 1 1/2"
Compost being added to our sopping wet garden--we had a lot of rain

My hard-working Hubs and his HOT boots.  At least he doesn't take his shirt off.
First he tilled the mud

Then he added the compost

Then he tilled and then had to turn it by hand/shovel

Meanwhile, in the basement, I was sowing enough seeds for a commune

Hubs is WORN OUT!

So excited for the garden.

I placed the seeds in a warm part of my house--dining room under the window.  I now find myself checking on them every time I walk in my dining room.  I'm not sure what kind of wonder-seeds I think I bought, but I think it takes more than 24 hours for them to germinate.  We'll wait until after April 15 to plant them in the garden.  We've got to get that last frost over with before we can risk it....even though it will be 78 on Friday.

Are any of you planting a garden this year?  If so, what are you planting?

Happy Monday!

xoxo,
Laurie

78 degrees!! Wow!! I love having a garden but it's too early around these parts to start one. I love your indoor starts though it should be fun to see how they take off! Sitting in a warm house by a window sounds pretty good, I'm predicting a bountiful harvest for you!!
