The 138th Kentucky Derby is now in the books. What a race it was. I had favored Union Rags in our local party draw. I think at one point Union Rags was second to last. Just when I thought I had a "good pick," I'll Have Another comes out of nowhere for an exciting win.
Saturday afternoon started off with a gathering of friends and neighbors at my best friend's mom's house. Her mom was born and raised in Louisville. Even a former Derby Queen herself. She has everything you need to have a fabulous Derby party...even when you aren't in Kentucky.
We arrived at 4 for the food, fun and pre-race festivities. There was plenty of traditional Derby fare and it was all delicious!
Fresh Black Bean Salsa, Strawberries and Powdered Sugar, and Ham Salad
Deviled Eggs, Ham Sammies, and Hot Browns (my favorite)
Gorgeous flowers
Fully Stocked Bar--the Mint Julep bar is in the other room!
Crab with Cocktail Sauce and Derby Horse
Yummy iced brownies and Pecan Pie tartlets
My favorite are the Hot Browns. A Swiss cheese bechamel sauce with turkey on a slice of french loaf topped with bacon. Seriously....how could they NOT be good?? Everything was quite yummy and many trips were taken to the buffet. Probably as many trips as there were to the Mint Julep station. My friend, Paige, was in charge of the Mint Juleps. Her mom had out her collection of Derby glasses (this one from the 115th running) just for Mint Juleps. As yummy as these are, one will really do you.
Our friend, Kathleen, made the house-favorite hat. Can you believe she made this from a headband and a paper plate? I'm all for a hat contest next year!
We were all busy socializing when the famous trumpet blew that the start of the race was near. We all piled in the den to watch the main event. Here we're preparing to sing:
And singing we did...it was required!
We had two draws for the race. Each draw was $5. Hubs and I had 2 in the first and 1 in the second. The best news was that we had 3 different horses and Union Rags was one of them. Well...it was good news pre-race! Here are our gracious winners:
Nothing beat the fact that my friend put her $5 down at the track for I'll Have Another. She was our big winner at the party.
How was your weekend?
Happy Monday, y'all!
xoxo,
Laurie
